Tulia, Texas—Cecil Harris, 94 died Saturday, January 8, 2011 in Tulia. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, January 12, 2011 in the Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel with Rev. Charles Davenport, officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. Cecil was born September 11, 1916 in Chillocothe, Texas to Edgar and Flora Harris. The family moved to Ropesville in August 1934. He graduated high school there. He and his brother were one of the first from Hockley Co. to volunteer for the US Army in 1941. He served from Jan. 1941 until Nov. 1945. He was one of the last members of the Horse Combat Calvary in WWII. He returned home in 1945 and then moved to Tulia in 1953. He married Edna Kirkland in December 1965. He was an usher at First Baptist Church for several years. Survivors include his wife: Edna Harris of Tulia, two daughters: Katherine Vaughn and Betty Ruth Gonzales, both of Tulia, two sons: Steve Kirkland of Lubbock and Larry Don Kirkland of Burns Flat, Oklahoma, two sisters: Betty and Leo Jones of Granbury and Kidy Stalcup of Lubbock, 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
