Tulia, Texas—Melvin Dell Young, 57, of Tempe, Arizona passed away on Friday morning, May 18 after a 2-year battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, May 23, 2007 in the First United Methodist Church of Tulia with Rev. Ernie McGaughey, retired Methodist minister officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Tulia under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. Melvin was born August 25, 1949 to L.D. and Annie Young of Tulia. He graduated from Kress High School and earned bachelors and masters degrees from Texas A&M University. He married Susan Witte on June 2, 1973. He was a former Kyrene 4-H leader and past chairman of the Dayspring United Methodist administration board. He was appointed by Governors Jane Hull and Bruce Babbit to the Arizona State Board of Appraisers where he served two terms as chairperson. For the past 12 years he has been owner and president of Aztec Agricultural Group, Inc. He is survived by his wife, Susan of Tempe, Arizona, one daughter; Sarah Kate Young of Ft. Worth, Texas, one son; Mark Douglas Young of Chandler, Arizona, two sisters; Maxine Carter and her husband Billy Ray of Sundown, Texas and Judine Wilks and her husband Dennis of Tulia, Texas, two brothers; Boyd Young and his wife Kay of Tulia, Texas and Stanley Young of Lubbock, Texas.
