Kress, Texas—Floyd Eugene Simmons, 64, passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at Swisher Memorial Hospital in Tulia. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. Friday, June 1, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Kress with former pastors Rev. Dan Reynolds and Rev. Jay Simpson officiating. Eulogies will be given by Jim Campbell and Barry Street. Burial will follow in Kress Cemetery under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. Floyd was born on September 18, 1942 in Pampa, Texas to Beulah and Ross Simmons. Floyd attended and graduated from LeFors High School in 1961. He was a graduate of West Texas State University Class of 1964 with an Industrial Arts degree. Floyd was a member of the Association of Texas Professional Educators, Association of Texas Technology Education, and South Plains Industrial Technology Association. Floyd’s first and only teaching job brought him to Kress, Texas where he established a state award winning woodworking program. Floyd was the first industrial arts teacher at Kress. His program enjoyed an excellent reputation for producing quality products and quality craftsmen in the many students whose lives he touched. Floyd and his students were rewarded with many honors over the 41 years he taught at Kress including: 15 State Championships from 1980 to 2001; 7 times Best Project in the State; over 1600 students through the program; Educator of the Year Special Services ATPE; Distinguished Educator of the Year ATTE; State Resolution from the State Board of Education honoring Floyd and his students; Local ATPE President; ATPE State Treasurer; ITE State Rulebook Committee; ATTE President’s Award, Distinguished Leadership Award ATTE: Professional Rights and Responsibilities Committee; Who’s Who in Texas Education; ATPE President of Region 16; Master Teacher Advisory Committee; and numerous school committees. Floyd married Cynithia Ann Reddell in Canadian, Texas on May 1, 1964. Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert “Bob” Simmons and his wife Laura of Canyon; three grandchildren, Zachary, Britt, and Lindley Simmons all of Canyon. An Education fund has been established for Floyd’s beloved grandchildren in lieu of flowers as requested by the family. Donations will be accepted at the Kress National Bank.
