Martha Elizabeth Courtney, 60, of Lubbock, passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2011 in Lubbock. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 16, 2011 in Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel. Burial will follow in Plainview Cemetery under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. Visitation will be Thursday, July 14, 2011 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Martha was born April 6, 1951 to Dr. Robert H. and Vernon Mitchell, in Fort Worth, Texas. She met Harold Courtney through hot air ballooning and they married on February 11, 1989 in Lubbock, TX using their own hot air balloon in the ceremony. Martha attended Plainview High School, and graduated from SMU in 1971. She went on to earn her license for Hospital Administrator, and worked in this capacity at Lockney Hospital. Martha also became interested in the Lions Club where she received various awards and recognitions. These included the 100% President’s Pin, and the 5 Diamond Pin presented to her by the International President. Throughout her adult life, Martha influenced many lives working in PTA and serving as a Girl Scout leader. She was a caring and loving individual. She is preceded in death by her parents Dr. Robert H. and Vernon Mitchell. Martha is survived by her husband, Harold Courtney of Lubbock, TX; two daughters, Michelle Couch of Dallas, TX, and Neta Hanson of Lubbock, TX; three sons, Robert Couch and wife Jill of Dallas, TX, Donnie Courtney of Lubbock and Lynn Courtney of Lubbock, TX; one sister Leah Dayton and husband John of Plainview, TX; ten grandchildren; one niece Amy Gausin and one nephew Jonathan Dayton.
