Alama Smith (Plainview)

Funeral services for Alama Young Smith, 93, of Harris Neck Island, Georgia will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel at First Methodist Church, Plainview, Texas with the Reverend David Haygood, retired minister of Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church in Savannah, Georgia officiating. Burial will follow at Plainview Memorial Park by Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. Mrs. Smith died Monday, June 11, 2007 at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah Georgia from injuries suffered in a fall on Sunday, June 10, 2007. Alama was born July 17, 1913 in Plainview to Samuel Jackson and Maude Baughman Young who were early pioneers to Hale County. Mrs. Smith spent her early years northwest of Plainview until the Young family moved to the Happy Union community where she attended the Ellen Community School. She graduated from Plainview High School in 1930, attended West Texas State Teachers College in 1930-1931 and later received a certificate in Engineering, Science and Management War Training in 1943 from the University of Texas. Alama married John G. Smith June 5, 1935 in Galveston, Texas. After living in Port Arthur, Texas for 16 years, Alama and John and their two children returned to the Happy Union community where they were partners in the Happy Union Gin. In 1952 they moved to Plainview and with Robert Caudle built and ran Westside Gin until 1987. In 1999 she moved to Harris Neck Island, Georgia where she built a home next to her daughter and son-in-law and where she lived until her death. Mrs. Smith is survived by her brother, S.J. Young of Lubbock, her daughter and son-in-law Karen and Don Stewart of Harris Neck Island, Georgia, her son and daughter-in-law Kirk and Sue Smith of Plano, Texas, grandchildren Lang & Wendy Smith of Louisville, Colorado, Susannah and Doug Gordon of Parker, Colorado, John Matthews of Atlanta, Georgia and Kathryn & Nathan Tart of Austin Texas, and four great grandchildren. She is also survived by three step-grandchildren, Jordan Smith of Austin, Greg Stewart of Atlanta and Lisa Bevis of Cedartown, Georgia and two great step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John G. Smith, two sisters and two brothers, Lois Haggard Culp, Elsie Maxey, Marvin Young and Virgil Young. Visitation for family and friends will be from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Friday, June 15, 2007 at Kornerstone Funeral Directors. The family suggests memorials to favorite charities or to First Methodist Church, 1001 W. th Street, Plainview, TX 79072.
