He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Schumpert Memorial Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1951. He then served on the medical staff at the University of Mississippi Medical School, and he was Director of Medical Services at Mississippi’s primary psychiatric hospital. Dr. Busby provided health care to three generations of Plainview residents beginning in 1965 when he moved here with his family and established his solo practice in Internal Medicine. He also served the community by taking leadership roles in Plainview Hospital, where he twice served as chief of staff, and on the Board of Health, where he served two terms. During his years of practice, he directed the Hale County Health Department’s chest and tuberculosis program and was a clinical associate professor at Texas Tech University School of Medicine. He proudly served in the Army and Army Reserve for 32 years and was commanding officer of the Selective Service unit of the U.S. Army Reserve Corps in the Plainview area. He retired with the rank of colonel. Dr. Busby was a faithful member of the Plainview First United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities, including membership in the Harmony Sunday School class and on the Administrative Board. He also participated in the church’s medical missions to Guatemala. In 2008 a plaque bearing his name was placed in the Centennial Circle of Honor in Regional Park. During his youth, Dr. Busby enjoyed farming, hunting, and deep sea fishing. He later enjoyed going skiing and snowmobiling in New Mexico with his children and grandchildren. In later years, he was an avid world traveler. Dr. Busby was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Everett Busby, Jr., his mother-in-law Lura Bryan, and his first wife of 53 years, Mary Frances Bryan.
