Florence Carrell Sawyer (Plainview)

Florence Carrell Sawyer, 94, went to be with the Lord September 25, 2007. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday, September 28, 2007 at College Heights Baptist Church in Plainview with Rev. Don Robertson officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday, September 27, 2007 from 4:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Kornerstone Funeral Directors. Mrs. Sawyer was born on April 27, 1913 in Stuart, Oklahoma to the late Newton and Myrtle Carrell. She married Roy L. Sawyer on June 2, 1941 in Noble, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death in 1997. Mrs. Sawyer graduated from Oklahoma College for Women and Texas Tech University with a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Development. She was a teacher in the Plainview Independent School District for 30 years. Mrs. Sawyer Past President of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, a lifetime member of the Parent Teacher Association and member of the Retired Teachers Association. Upon retiring, Mrs Sawyer was very active with volunteer work. She was President of Pink Ladies, board member of the Hale County Senior Citizens, and on the inaugural board of directors that started Hospice of the Plains in Plainview, Texas. In addition, she delivered meals on wheels for a number of years and was very active in the RSVP organization. Mrs. Sawyer was recognized as Volunteer of the Year in 1986 by RSVP and the South Plains Association of Governments also awarded her the Outstanding Old Texan designation. Mrs. Sawyer was a long time member of College Heights Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for over 30 years. She was a faithful, dedicated member and served her Lord in many ways too numerous to list. Her church chose her as Mother of the Year in 1988 and also gave special recognition for her service to various ministries. She is survived by three daughters: Sandy Sawyer of Plano, Texas, Carrell Ann Simmons and husband Stan of Denton and Judy Weatherford and husband Max of Plainview; one son: Tom Sawyer and wife Abigail of Lexington, Texas; one brother: John Wesley Carrell of Ardmore, Oklahoma; three sisters: Laura Mather of Kenilworth, Illinois, Geneva Newkumet of Anacortes, Washington and Ruth Tildon of Oklahoma City Oklahoma; eight grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. In later years, Mrs. Sawyer was lovingly cared for by Ann Mathiasch and Lynnette Centeno. Her grandchildren, Barry Boatman, David Boatman, Shelley Cannon, Scott Simmons, Kimberly Shaw, Todd Weatherford, Tom Sawyer and Zach Sawyer will serve as pallbearers for their grandmother. Memorials may be made to College Heights Baptist Church, Hospice or a favorite charity.
