John Calvin Carter, 79, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at Covenant Hospital in Plainview. Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, October 13, 2007 at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Lewis Holland and Dr. Max Browning officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. John was born on March 11, 1928 in Crowell, Texas to John Robert and Ruth Gladys Carter. He grew up there and graduated from Crowell High School in 1945. He attended Texas Tech University on a football scholarship until he sustained an injury. He joined the U.S. Army and served in Japan during the occupation after WWII. He received an appointment to United States Military Academy at West Point while serving in Japan. He attended West Point for two years before coming home and meeting his future wife. He married Wanda Gale Rodgers on August 25, 1950 in Plainview. He finished his degree at Wayland Baptist University in 1952. He farmed in the area for 50 years before retiring in 1999. He was a Mason, and served many Masonic bodies for over 50 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He also was a Bethel Bible Teacher, worked with the youth of his church for 10 years, served as Chairman of the Board, and was an Adult Substitute Sunday School teacher He is survived by his wife, Wanda Carter of the Home; two sons, John David Carter and his wife Karen of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Robert Calvin Carter and his wife Lorrie of Carrollton, Texas; one sister, Rondelle Newton of Plainview; six grandchildren, Ashley Herman and husband Greg of Boulder, Colorado, Nicolette McGuire and husband Ryan of Berkley, California, John Robert Carter of Kentucky, Shannon Smith of Dallas, Texas, Susan Wells of Tulsa, Oklahoma, David Carter of Dallas, Texas; and Numerous Nieces and Nephews. The family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church, 1001 W. 7th, Plainview, Texas 79072. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 7 P.M. at Kornerstone Funeral Directors.
