Herb Howell (Tulia)

Tulia, Texas—Herb Howell, 82, died Saturday, November 3, 2012 in Tulia. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, November 7, 2012 in the Central Church of Christ with Mr. Mike Prather, Mr. Bruce Baird and Mr. Billy Lynn (Bubby) Marshall officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park in Dimmitt. Herb was born February 20, 1930 in Floydada. He grew up in Dimmitt and attended the Bethel Community schools and graduated from Dimmitt High School in 1948. He was a lifelong farmer and continued farming until Sept. 2012. He joined the US Navy and served on the USS Rowan destroyer ship during the Korean War from 1952-1956. While in the Navy he received the Korean Service Award and the National Defense Award. He returned to Dimmitt and met and married Montie Hale on March 15, 1960 in Idabel, Oklahoma. He was also a lifetime member of the AQHA and was an AQHA judge for 25 years. He and his brothers, Jack and Jimmie (Howell Brothers Quarter Horses) received the 2007 Legacy award for registering a horse with the AQHA for 50 consecutive years. He was a member of the Church of Christ. The family wishes to thank the staff of Swisher Memorial Hospital and Area Community Hospice for their love and care for Herb during his illness. His family includes his wife: Montie Howell of Tulia, one son and daughter-in-law: Mattlock and Cheryl Howell of Tulia, one daughter and son-in-law: Jacque and Joe Light of Odessa, four grandchildren: Aaron Reed and wife Erica of Odessa, Adelle Light of Odessa, Kyla Howell of Tulia and Dylan Howell of Tulia, one great granddaughter: Ava Elizabeth Reed of Odessa, eight brothers and sisters: Charles Henry Howell and wife Carol of Weatherford, Jack Howell and wife Charlene of Dimmitt, Jimmie Howell and wife Sue of Dimmitt, Oran Howell and wife Barbara of Corsicana, Susie Enloe of Emporia, Kansas, Gayle Stovall and husband Melvin of Fritch, Linda Bethea and husband Marvin of Springtown and John Howell and wife Colleene of Texline. He is preceded in death by his parents: Moss and Hattie Howell and a sister: Karen Ahlerich. Memorials may be made to the Coffee Memorial Blood Center, 7500 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, Texas 79124.
