Mrs. Vernon was born June 8, 1920 to Henry and Mellie (Taylor) Martin in Caddo County, Oklahoma near Anadarko. She attended schools in Omega, Oklahoma. She moved with her family by covered wagon to East Texas in November 1937. She traveled with an aunt and two sisters to revival and church meetings and sang solos, duets, trios and quartets. Gospel music was always an important part of her life, and her alto voice was beautiful! She was a lifetime member of the Assembly of God Church. She also lived in Brownwood before marrying Silvin R. Steveson April 27, 1941 and moving to Slaton. Later that year they moved to Levelland where they owned Steveson’s Shoe Repair Service, and Violet was the Assistant Chief Operator for General Telephone Company, retiring after 25 years of service in May of 1976. Silvin preceeded her in death January 3, 1963. She was also preceeded in death by her parents, four sisters: Little Sister, Rosie Lee Nance, Ola Mae Walker and Lois Malone; one brother: Clarence Martin; one sister-in-law, Charlsie Hinson; and four brothers-in-law: Calvin Martin, Pete Nance, Al Williamson and Homer Cherry. Violet’s family remembers her for her thoughtfulness of others, especially after retirement and the gifts of crochet she shared with MANY, MANY others. In 2003, she crocheted over 75 lap throws to be given to shut-ins and people in nursing homes who were bound to a wheelchair. It gave her great joy to share whatever she could with others. Her German Chocolate Cakes were an often- requested item from the telephone office ladies and her family. Mrs. Vernon lived in Levelland from 1941 until 1986 when she moved to Plainview. She retired in Plainview to be near her only daughter and her family, living with them for over a year before moving to Olton. Those left to cherish and share her memories include one daughter: Gretta Warrick and her husband Randy, of Plainview; four grandchildren: Kacy Read and her husband Russ, of Mill Creek, WA; Peter Warrick and his wife Santana, of Plainview; Emily Warrick of Plainview; and Brenda Keener and her husband Greg, of Sugar Land; six great-grandchildren: Remington Read, Sylven and Lakin Warrick, Kieryn Warrick, and Ryan and Kylie Kenner. She also leaves behind four sisters: Emma D Martin of San Angelo, Lillian Windham and her husband Raymon, of Balch Springs, Lola B Cherry of Apache, OK, and Christene Martin and her husband Harley, of Ft. Worth; one brother, Luther A Martin and his wife Jane, of Crowley; and two brothers-in-law: S.K. Walker of Garland and E.T.
