February 25, 2008 Tulia, Texas—Billy N. Cowan, 75, passed away Sunday, February 24, 2008 in Amarillo. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 27, 2008 in the First Baptist Church with Rev. James Hassell, pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. A Family and friends visitation will be from 7:00 to 7:30pm Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at the funeral home. Billy was born on October 19, 1932 in Littlefield, TX where he grew up and graduated from high school. He worked for the Memphis, TX newspaper before joining the US Navy in November, 1952 where he served in Korea until October 1956 when he was discharged. He married Jo Ellen Dingler on November 25, 1956 in Clarendon. They lived in Littlefield until moving to Tulia in 1961. He worked for the Tulia Herald for 30 years. In 1992 he worked for the Tulia Prison as a guard for 5 years retiring in 1997. He was a member of FBC Littlefield. Survivors include his wife; Jo Cowan of Tulia, two daughters; Janet Langston of Brownwood and Sherry McElroy of Perryton, one sister; Bettye Groh of Rowlett, TX, 5 grandchildren; Amanda Berry of Brownwood, Jason Langston of Brownwood, Nicholas McElroy of Atchison, Kansas, Michael McElroy of Perryton and Jonathan McElroy of Perryton and 2 great grandsons; Kelton Berry of Brownwood and Olin Berry of Brownwood. He is preceded in death by his parents; Phillip and Norma Cowan and two brothers; Charles Cowan and Harold Cowan. Memorials may be made to the Tulia Cemetery Association, PO Box 116, Tulia, TX 79088 or the American Cancer Association, 3915 Bell St., Amarillo, TX 79109.
