Shelby Howell, Jr., 92, of Plainview died on Monday, April 22, 2013. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 26, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel. A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013 at the funeral home. Shelby was born on November 6, 1920 to Shelby & Della Howell in Merkel, TX. In 1937 he graduated as valedictorian from LaMesa High School. He was a graduate of Texas A & M University and received a mechanical engineering degree in 1942. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and served with the 7th armored division as a company commander in the European Theatre. He was awarded two Bronze Stars for Valor. He founded Excel Hybrid Seed Company in 1960. He was a successful farmer in Hale & Swisher County for many years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was a proud member of the Texas A&M exstudent association and a fighting Texas aggie to the end. Gig’em! He is survived by his wife, Faye Howell of Plainview, TX; one son Richard Howell of Brownsville, TX; three grandchildren, Rachel Smith of New Braunfels, Sarah Godat of Dallas, TX, and Michael Howell of Dallas, TX; and one great grandbaby, Duncan Smith.
