Virdie Egger (Plainview)

Virdie Egger, 99, of Plainview, passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 5, 2013 at Kornerstone Chapel with Mr. Oscar Chavez officiating. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, August 4, 2013, at the funeral home. Virdie Christopher (Hodnett) Egger was born February 23, 1914, in Snyder, Texas. She graduated from Plainview High School in 1931 and earned the B.S. and M.Ed. from the University of Texas in 1935. She taught school in Mitchell and Nolan counties and was the girls’ basketball coach. She also bought land and operated her own farm in Dawson County before marrying Owen Landfair Egger of Nolan County in 1944. She and Owen moved their family to Hale County in 1952 where she helped Owen with working the farm as well as taking care of the home. Virdie was a role model for her family and friends, fully living every day of her 99 years. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her savior when she was 9 years old. She served almost continuously as a Sunday school teacher from the age of 17 until her health declined. She served as church treasurer for many years and was a leader in Vacation Bible School. She was an active member of the Plainview High School Band Boosters during the student years of all four of her children. She also supported the local 4-H club in which all four children were involved, and she herself was an active member of the Liberty Home Demonstration Club for many years. Her great passions were local history and genealogical research, and her proficiency in them provided her with opportunities to lead numerous workshops on both subjects all over the South Plains. She was a co-founder of the Hi-Plains Genealogical Society and an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the South Plains Genealogical Society, the Hale County Historical Society, the Louisiana Historical Society, and the Kentucky Historical Society. She established the genealogical section of the Unger Memorial Library, and provided a security system and a microfilm reader for it. She and Owen were among the founding members of the Llano Estacado Museum of Wayland Baptist University, to which they provided artifacts and historical expertise. Virdie and Owen loved to travel, and in their retirement they visited Europe three times, Canada twice, and Mexico and the western Pacific once. They traveled to almost all of the fifty states. Virdie was preceded in death by her parents, J.J. and Lucy Katherine (Kate) Hodnett; the love of her life, Owen Egger; her brother Truett Hodnett and his wife Bernice; her daughter and son-in-law Landa and Lanny Loe; and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Egger. She is survived by her son Vernon Egger and his wife Mary of Statesboro, Georgia; her daughter Katherine Egger of Plainview; and her son Alton Egger and Janette Cuevas of Nolan, Texas. Her grandchildren are April Loe Yoder and husband Todd of Littleton, Colorado; Christy Loe Kidd and husband Brannon of Humble, Texas; Allison Loe Reilly and husband Jim of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Krista Egger of Washington, D.C.; Rachel Egger of Atlanta, Georgia; Christi Egger Jordan and husband Karry of Tulsa, Oklahoma; James Egger of Roscoe, Texas; Clint Egger and wife Sarah of San Angelo, Texas. Her four great-grandchildren are Kaitlyn and Koby Kidd of Humble, Texas, and Kylie and Colton Jordan of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Active pallbearers at the service will be Stan Foster, Marty Gomez, David Pearson, Daniel Perez, John Sigwald, and Rodney Watson. Honorary pallbearers are Samuel Aguilera, Kenneth Pearson, Graddy Tunnell, and Kenneth Sjogren. In lieu of flowers, Virdie suggested donations to the Hi-Plains Genealogical Society at the Unger Memorial Library of Plainview, or the Llano Estacado Museum of Wayland Baptist University at Plainview. The family wishes to express gratitude to generous and loving friends and to the professional and caring staff at the Santa Fe House, Area Home Health Care, Plainview Healthcare Center, and Area Community Hospice of Plainview.
