Silverton, Texas—Johnnie H. Burson, 89, died Monday, May 19, 2008 in Tulia. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 22, 2008 in the First Baptist Church of Silverton with Jerry Miller and Jess Little officiating. Burial will follow in Silverton Cemetery under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. Mr. Burson was born May 22, 1918 to John and Margaret Burson on their ranch in Silverton. He lived there all his life except when he was away at school. He graduated from West Texas High School in Canyon and attended Sul Ross State University in Alpine. He returned to Silverton and married Dean Griffith on October 27, 1939 in Hollis Oklahoma. He was a rancher, horse breeder and a cowboy poet. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Silverton and a deacon for 60 years. Survivors include his wife; Dean Burson of Silverton, two sons and daughters-in-law; John and Beverly Burson of Roswell, NM and Jimmy and Rhenda Burson of Silverton, one sister; Luree Burson of Olton, nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law; Judy and Carroll Welch. His body will lie in state at the First Baptist Church in Silverton from Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at noon until service time. Memorials may be made to the Silverton Public Library or your favorite charity.
