Donald “Whitey” Thompson, 66, of Kress, Texas died Saturday, June 14, 2008 at his residence. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 17, 2008 in the Kress Cemetery under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. Mr. Thompson was born August 25, 1941 in Munday, Texas to WB and Juanita Herring Thompson. After graduating from Kress High School in 1960 he worked at the Claytonville Gin. He began farming with his dad and later on his own. He farmed and ranched in Swisher County for over 50 years. He was a stockholder and director at First State Bank in Tulia, a stockholder and director of Petra Oil in Oklahoma City, a part owner of Midwest Stallion Station in Kress. He was the owner/manager of Center Plains Gin at Kress and worked at Edcot Gin in Edmonson. Survivors include two daughters and their husbands; Denise and Kayle Watts of Lubbock and Mendi and Russ Awtry of Lubbock, two brothers; Tommy Thompson of Petersburg and Ronnie Thompson of Tulia, one sister; Lou Bevill of Kress and two granddaughters and a grandson; Katherine and Meredith Cook, daughters of Denise and Kayle Watts and Morgan Awtry, son of Mendi and Russ Awtry all of Lubbock. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society or a favorite charity.
