Tony Jones(Plainview)

A.W. “Tony” Jones, 92, of Plainview passed away on Monday, June 30, 2008 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Travis Hart officiating. Burial will follow in Plainview Cemetery under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors in Plainview. A visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 P.M. at the funeral home. He was born at home on April 18th, 1916, in the Running Water community. His family was one of the true early pioneer families of Hale County. His grandfather had the first store in Plainview on what is now the Courthouse square. He grew up on the family farm and attended schools there in the Runningwater community. He graduated from Runningwater High School in 1933. After he left home, he worked for John Mathis at Conner Mathis Company. During this time, he also served as a fireman, living at the Central Fire Station in Plainview. He married Wanda Gilliland on August 2, 1951 in Muleshoe. He worked in the Automotive Parts industry for 50 years. He and Wanda loved to camp and fish. His love of the outdoors made him a natural Scout Leader. He was a district commissioner of the Haynes District of Boy Scouts of American for many years. And while he was never the “official” troop master, he was the one that was there to fill in at the meetings when needed and to make sure there was always someone to take the boys camping. His dedication to Scouting is shown by the fact that both of his sons are Eagle Scouts. He retired in the mid 80’s, from Carlisle Motor Machine Service, and he and Wanda traveled to many places in their motor home. He and Wanda served in every possible capacity with the Plainview Good Sams Club. He was awarded the Pioneer Man of the Year 2007. He was a member of First Baptist Church and for many years he was an usher and a greeter. He was also a member of the Hale County Senior Citizens and has served as its President and on its Board of Directors. He also spent many, many hours as a volunteer with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program helping make Plainview a better place to live. He was preceded in death by his parents, Coleman and Lillie Jones and his brothers, Owen, His twin Warren, Bunk, and Pete. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Jones of Plainview; two sons, Kaci W. Jones and wife Kendra of Cedar Park, Texas, Steve K. Jones and wife Karen of Ventura, California; six grandchildren, Kristen Bigbee, Kourtney Jones, Kaitlyn Jones, Sara Jones, Colin Jones, Tegan Jones; one great grandson, Jack Jones. Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church or the Hale County Senior Citizens.
