Vergil Duane Kunkel, 79, of Plainview passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Dr. Alan Abel officiating. Arrangements are under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the funeral home. Mr. Kunkel was born on April 22, 1934 in Hamilton, Texas to A.W. & Ida Kunkel. He married Sarah Erdmann on January 23, 1955 in Vernon, Texas. Vergil worked as a diesel mechanic for 50+ years until he was forced to stop due to his illness. He loved carpentry. He was always working on some project in his shed in the backyard. He loved the Dallas Cowboys. You could always find him sitting in the family room on Sundays watching his favorite team. He also loved hunting. But his greatest love of all was his love for God, his family and his friends. Mr. Kunkel is survived by his wife: Sarah Kunkel of Plainview; two daughters: Deborah Kunkel Daniel & husband Randy of Lake Forest, Ill. And Karla Kunkel Stemple & husband Jay of San Angelo; one son: Nickoy Duane Kunkel & wife Shelley D’Lyn of Albuquerque, NM; three brothers: Jess Kunkel, Dennis Kunkel and Martin Kunkel; two sisters: Gladys Kunkel and Sarah Fowler; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents: A.W. & Ida Kunkel and two brothers: Jim Kunkel and Cliff Kunkel. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the members of Area Community Hospice of Plainview and Lockney Health and Rehabilitation Center. Their dedication and effort to provide quality care over the last 5 months were a heartwarming blessing to the entire family.
