James Edward DeWese (Plainview)

Dr. James Edward DeWese of Plainview passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 in Amarillo at the VA Hospice Unit at the age of 89. Celebration services will be held Tuesday April 22, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. Services will be held at the Happy Union Baptist Church with Pastor Richard Miller officiating. A Graveside service will be held at 4:30 P.M. in Gruver Cemetery in Gruver, TX. A family visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Monday evening at the funeral home. James was born on February 1, 1925 in Stonefort, IL to Ed and Ophelia DeWese. He served in the United States Navy in underwater demolition during WWII. Later he moved to Plainview to attend Wayland. After Wayland he went on to get a Masters in Speech, a Masters in Education, and a Ph.D. in Christian Counseling. He pastored a small church, taught at Plainview High, was a probation officer and worked in prison ministry. He married Velma Wright, the love of his life, on December 24, 1961 and they lived in Plainview for 51 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma; his parents; a half sister, Virginia; and a grandson, Scott Myers. He is survived by his three daughters, Jeanine Campbell & husband Gene of Ft. Myers, FL, Roxanne King of Plainview, and Bennie Edwards & husband Roger of Bushland, TX; nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
