D L Miller entered his life’s journey on February 8, 1927 in Weston, TX. He is the second child, after Mary Guthrie (SM), and eldest son of Homer and Pernie Miller, then of the Ellen Community. The family endured the Great Depression and Dust Bowl on the family Dairy Farm, near where D L would spend most of his life. D L met Thelma Jean Manning in Petersburg, where they attended high school and D L graduated at 16. He went on to Texas A&M but left early to participate in WWII with many of their greatest generation. D L and Jean were married in Clovis, NM and after his time as a Navy Corpsman, moved back to the Barwise Community to farm and raise their family. They had 2 sons and a daughter and farmed until the early 1970’s when he left farming to become an owner of Barwise Elevator and build their home nearby. There were many great family times working and at play. Jean preceded D L in death in early 1983. D L met and married Inez Gary Smith in the spring of 1984. She also has 3 children. She made her home with him and had 21 years of happy family life with the entire family that was a testament to both and their love of life and happiness. Inez preceded D L in death in 2004. D L was a happy man and adored his family and life in the country. He attended church and guided his family with a firm and gentle hand. He had many friends and enjoyed being with them all throughout his life. He achieved a position in the Masonic Lodge of Petersburg and earned the Silver Beaver award for exemplary leadership in Boy Scouts of America. He taught Sunday School and led church groups, and was a member of the Petersburg School Board. D L completed his journey and enjoyment of life on April 22, 2014. He is loved and missed by many. D L is survived by his brother, Ralph (Alice) Miller and Sister, Pat Kerby and their families; sons Rex (Leann) and Scott (Karen) Miller and families and daughter Gay Hall (Mark) and families; Roy (Angie) Smith and families, Virginia Aldridge (Mark), and families and Tracy (Angie) Smith and families. D L has 18 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren to carry on in his legacy. Graveside services under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 26, 2014 in the Petersburg Cemetery with Doug Hensley officiating. A visitation will be held on Friday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. at Kornerstone Funeral Directors in Plainview.
