Leah Mitchell Dayton lost her battle with cancer on August 25, 2014.. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Garland Street Church of Christ with Chaplain Oscar Chavez, of Area Community Hospice, officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. A family visitation will be held from 6 to 8 on Friday evening at the funeral home. She was born in Ft. Worth, Texas on April 27, 1953 and moved to Plainview shortly thereafter. She lived almost all of her life in Plainview. She met her husband John at Plainview High School and married in 1971. After raising two children, Leah decided to go back to Wayland and get her teaching degree. Over the last 19 years as a teacher in Plainview ISD, she touched the lives of many students and colleagues. Leah holds a school record of seven Plainview ISD Teacher of the Year awards, the PTA Lifetime Award, and has been nominated twice for the Walt Disney Teacher of the Year Award. Last March, Leah was so proud to have a scholarship named in her honor. Everyone that met Leah will never forget the unique, inspirationally sweet person she was. She will forever be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to us all. She is survived by her husband John Dayton, her daughter Amy Gausin, son Jonathan Dayton, and her grandchildren Dustin, Ali and Tanner.
