Tulia, Texas— Helen Winifred Rhodes Young, 87, died Friday, October 24, 2014 in Tulia. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Tulia. Arrangements are under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. A visitation will be held on Monday, October 27, 2014 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm in the Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel. Mrs. Young was born August 1, 1927 in Turkey, Texas to Ernest and Della Ruth Rhodes. She graduated from Turkey High School with the Class of 1944. She married John Thomas Young, Jr. on August 19, 1944 in Angleton, Texas. They moved to Tulia in 1946 where they opened and operated a Texaco Service Station on the eastside of the square in downtown Tulia, now occupied by Centennial Bank. In 1954 they opened a new Texaco Station on Highway 87, which they operated until 1958 when Mr. Young opened John Young Tire Co. on 6th street. He sold that business and began farming in 1978. Mrs. Young was bookkeeper for these businesses as well as being a homemaker for her family. She enjoyed China painting, knitting and playing bridge with family and friends. Mrs. Young is preceded in death by her husband, John T. Young, Jr. in May 2003. They were married 58 years. Survivors include her daughters: Sharon W. Scott of Lumberton and Jeanne Todd and husband Richard of Tulia and her son: Johnny W. Young and wife Barbara of Lubbock, seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. Memorials may be made to the Tulia Cemetery Association, PO Box 116, Tulia, Texas 79088.
