Tulia, Texas—Carl Jennings was born in Amarillo August 21, 1930 to Herschel and Thelma Duke Jennings. He was the 3rd of 5 children. He grew up in Canyon, TX and attended school at the West Texas Teacher Training School on the WT campus in Canyon from 1st grade through high school, graduating in 1947. He was active in student life and was elected president of his junior class. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S, Navy. He served during the Korean War. He was a submariner and a boxer for the Navy. He attended college at Abilene Christian and West Texas State. He lettered in boxing at WT and was in the "Aggie Club". After college and service to his country, he went to Tulia where he worked with his father in the fuel and appliance business. Then he married Mary Ellen Montandon on August, 5, 1955. He established his own gun and sporting goods store in Tulia and a gun and boat shop in Amarillo. He also sold Honda motorcycles in Tulia for a few years. His passion was guns. He traded guns for over 70 years, and his hero was John Wayne. He and his father did considerable exploration in the oil business during the early 1960's. They enjoyed hunting together in Colorado. Carl was an honorary member of the Dallas Gun Collectors Association. He had many friends from many parts of the world that dealt with him in guns, and cowboy and military memorabilia. Carl was the family Historian, and a great story-teller. He was a generous and caring person, a true Christian, loyal husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and a gentle, caring friend to many. He died on Nov. 2, 2014 in Tulia, TX. Carl is survived by his wife: Mary Jennings of Tulia, one son: Jay Jennings of Canyon, one daughter: Lori Wright and husband Randy of Daingerfield, two brothers: Duke Jennings of Jonesboro, AR and Alvin Jennings of Hurst, one sister: Donna Bolton of Keller, two grandchildren: Jared Wright of Pasadena, CA and Jordan Wright of College Station and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Neal Jennings. Memorials may be made to the High Plains Children’s Home, 11461 S. Western, Amarillo, Texas 79118. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, November 5, 2014 in the Central Church of Christ with burial to follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at the funeral home.
