Her family later settled in Winters, Texas where she met “Papa” Joe W. Smith whom she then married in 1934. She graduated from Wayland Baptist University becoming a teacher and librarian for Plainview ISD. One of her greatest contributions to the world was her beautiful garden, a place the neighborhood saw as a gathering point for anyone wanting to play baseball, eat her homemade ice cream or just sit under the arbor and watch the birds sing. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sisters and four brothers. She has left a legacy of generations including: daughter Lorna Jones and her husband Marvin, daughter Susie Drake and her husband Paul, Granddaughter Pam Lineros and her husband Jose, Granddaughter Melissa Chesher and her husband Steve, Granddaughter Paula Hooper and her husband Chuck Hengstler; grandsons, Devin Drake and wife Debbie, Tim Drake; Great-Grandkids Miranda Box and her husband Michael, Kaylea Hooper, Will Chesher and his wife Brittney, Katie and Ben Chesher, Luisa and Victor Lineros, Tabitha, Sam, Jack and Alex Drake, as well as two Great-Great-Grandsons Brody and Baylor Box. She will always be remembered fondly for her love of her family, her garden and her God.
