Services for Harvey Lewis Pennell of Plainview will be at First Presbyterian Church, 2101 Utica Street, in Plainview at 2:00 pm Thursday, February 12, 2009, conducted by Dr. Mark Stoub. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park by Kornerstone Funeral Directors. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Wednesday, February 11, 2009. Mr. Pennell passed away February 10, 2009 in Prairie House Living Center. He was 65 years of age. Harvey was born May 3, 1943 in Slaton to Donald David and Opal Lois (Howard) Pennell. Harvey graduated from Southland High School in 1961. He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1967. He began his teaching and coaching career at Plainview’s Estacado Junior High facility. In the 1969 he coached the Red Dogs Junior Varsity Team in addition to teaching geography. In 1970 he was a varsity assistant under Bill Davis for two years and under Jim Pollard for a year and was an assistant track coach in 1971. In 1972 he was Defensive Coordinator and Secondary Coach. Harvey was also the Junior Varsity Coach. He taught World History and American History at Plainview High School. He left Plainview teaching staff to work for High Plains Pavers for three years. Mr. Pennell received his Vocational Certification in San Marcus at Texas State University. He returned to Plainview’s teaching staff in 1981 and Coordinator of Vocational Academic Education. He was a Dean at Plainview High School for five years while attending West Texas A & M University to get his Mid-Management Certification. In 1987, Mr. Pennell became the Hale Center High School Principal for five years and became the Federal Programs Director in Hale Center for seven years. Harvey received his Superintendent’s Certification at Sul Ross State University. In June 2001 he accepted the Special Services Director’s position for Plainview Independent School District. He retired in November 2001 completing 32 years in the school system. Following his retirement, he worked two years with the Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program as a monitor. In 1966 He married Bennie Holliday, the mother of his son Heath Pennell. Harvey married Jeanie Ellerd Baer in Southland on February 12, 1983. Harvey was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Plainview. He was President of Hale Center Lion’s Club in 1995-1996. He enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels. Harvey and Jeanie were honored with a plaque displayed in the Running Water Draw Regional Park for the Centennial Circle of Honor in August of 2008. He was an avid golfer and was a ski instructor on week-ends during the years 1974-1982 at Red River. Survivors include wife, Jeanie Pennell of Plainview, a son Heath Lewis Pennell and his wife Jennifer, their daughter Bryton McKenna Pennell and son Bryce Michael Cochran of Lubbock; a son Arthur Leroy Baer, III (Trey) and wife Jennifer, their daughters Jordan Haley and Sydney Elaine of North Richland Hills; a daughter Kristi Cheri Standford and husband Stevan, their daughter Hannah Bailee and son Barrett Sills of Lindale; two brothers Jerry Pennell and wife Carol of Harlingen, Don Harlan Pennell of Lubbock; a sister Karen Gail Callaway of Lubbock; a cousin Marilyn Biggs of Plainview, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; caregivers Betty Thomas and Josie Zavala.
