Tulia, Texas--Dr. Roy Allen McCasland passed away at the age of eighty in Tulia, Texas on Saturday, November 7, 2015. A funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church of Tulia on Saturday, November 14, at 10:30 a.m., with Reverend Charles Davenport, assisted by Reverend Jason Stone, officiating. Visitation will be at Kornerstone Funeral Directors in Tulia on Friday evening, November 13, from 5:30 to 7:00. Roy Allen McCasland was born in Tulia on February 26, 1935, the youngest child of Dr. R.F. and Irene McCasland. Roy attended Tulia public schools, graduating as valedictorian of his high school class in 1953. In high school, he was involved in drama and theater and was Drum Major of the high school band. His passions for theater and music continued throughout his lifetime. Roy received a Bachelor’s degree from Baylor University, and went on to graduate from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1961. He returned to Tulia and joined his father, Dr. R.F. McCasland, in his dental practice. Roy enjoyed a career as a dentist in Tulia for nearly 50 years. Roy was a dedicated citizen of Tulia, volunteering for many community events over the decades. He was a member of Kiwanis for his entire adult life. He was a devoted deacon, Sunday school teacher of third and fourth graders, and a member of the adult choir at First Baptist Church. At times, he served as a substitute or interim minister of music. He volunteered as a teacher at the City Church and was the music director for the First Baptist Church prison ministry. One of his greatest joys was making friends with and helping those who had been incarcerated. Roy loved performing in productions of the Tulia Community Theater. Roy is remembered for his robust sense of humor and enthusiasm for travel, especially to Europe, and to Colorado for snow skiing with friends and family. His passion for classical music and opera influenced many in his circle of friends to take an interest in those things as well. His genuine interest in others was Roy’s foremost guiding principle and many have benefitted from his generosity. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. R.F. McCasland and Irene Zeeck McCasland, his sister Helen Rose McCasland Simpson and her husband, John N. Simpson, and his nephew Paul Brown. He is survived by his sister Dorothy McCasland Brown and her husband, Robert Brown, of Tulia; nephew Steve Brown of Dripping Springs, Texas, nieces Camille Simpson Redding of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Suzanne Simpson McClure of Goodland, Kansas; four great-nephews and three great-nieces. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church of Tulia. Online condolences may be made at www.kornerstonefunerals.com.
