Tulia, Texas— Dorothy Ray (Bivens) Miller, 80, died Friday, April 3, 2009 in Amarillo. Graveside services will be at 3:00pm Thursday, April 9, 2009 in Rose Hill Cemetery with Bruce Baird, pastor of Central Church of Christ officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. Dorothy was born September 25, 1928 in Tulia to Andrew and Johnetta Virginia (Anderson) Bivens. She attended West Texas State Teachers College in Canyon and Texas Tech at Lubbock, where she was a beauty queen. She married Dr. R.H. Miller, Jr. on February 5, 1949. They had one daughter: Janet Sue Miller. Dorothy was the first Queen of the Tri-State Fair in Amarillo and that enabled her to go to the American Royal Queen Contest in Kansas City in 1948. She was also crowned Miss Lubbock in 1947. She was quite the horsewoman. She did square dancing on horseback. She loved her daughter with all her heart. She had a big heart and a wonderful manner with people. Survivors include a granddaughter; Alexa Rabb and husband John, a grandson; Clint Capps, a niece; Bethany Bivens and a nephew; Bart Bivens and wife Kacy, two great grandchildren; Holden and Samantha Rabb and a great niece and two great nephews; Camille, Heath and Holt Bivens. She is preceded in death by her daughter; Janet Sue Capps and her parents; Ray and Johnetta Virginia Bivens. The family would like to thank Lucia Boone and her staff for the excellent care they provided for Dorothy Ray and also the staff at Ware Care Center for taking good care of Dorothy Ray and also the staff at BSA Hospice for making her last days very peaceful.
