Tulia, Texas—J. C. Hughes, 95, passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2016 in Tulia. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, February 1, 2016 in the First Baptist Church with Rev. James Hassell and Rev. Jason Stone, officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. J.C. was born on July 10, 1920 to E.E. and Alta Mae Hughes in Hollis, Oklahoma. He grew up in Farwell, Texas where he was very active in all high school activities including all sports and one act play. He graduated from Farwell High School and attended college in Missouri. He married Walterine Block on Feb. 1, 1942. He served in the US Army during WWII. After his discharge they moved to Clovis and he worked for Frank Rierson Pontiac as an auto mechanic. They moved to Tulia in 1965 where he worked for his brother-in-law at the Frontier Body Shop. In 1970 they moved to Ruidoso, NM where they operated the Stage Coach Motel and operated Hughes Body Shop. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Ruidoso. They moved back to Tulia in 2000 after he retired. His wife, Walterine passed away in 2002. He loved to play softball and played for over 20 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Tulia and the Tulia VFW. Some of the things that made J.C. standout were his out-spoken personality, his caring and concern for others, and a kind heart. He was a down-to-earth person that would give you the shirt off his back, if you needed it. Life for him was plain and simple; “You love the Lord, rise every morning at sun-up for coffee, and then spend the rest of the day working”. He spent the last seven months of his life surrounded by wonderful caregivers, Sherry, Rosie, Mable, Sylvia, Lidia and Laurie. The friendships he developed during this time were a God given gift. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Swisher Memorial Hospital, the Assisted Living Unit, Area Community Hospice and Dr. Steven Rossi for all of their professional medical care and love. He is preceded in death by his wife, two brothers; Kenneth Hughes and Leroy Hughes, two sisters; Juanita Schengles and Juanelle Hughes and one granddaughter; Ronda Wilfong. He is survived by three daughters; Su Harland of Tulia, Pegi Russell of Tulia and Ka Wilfong and husband Ronnie of Tulia, one sister; Maxine Louder of Tucson, AZ, 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 2 great, great grandchildren and one on the way.
