Tulia, Texas—Eugene Hurt, 83, died on Friday, April 15, 2016 in Tulia. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 18, 2016 at 2:00 pm in the Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel with Mr. Lamar McBride officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. Eugene was born on June 22, 1932 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas to Ed and Gracie Hurt. He lived and grew up in an era when families were forced to move from place to place to find work. Most of his younger years were spent working on the farm or working in the orchards of California. He married Betty Jean Johnson on January 4, 1956 in Clovis, NM and settled on a farm east of Quitaque. They moved to Tulia in 1958 where he worked for Tulia Wheat Growers, Harmon and Toles and then for Mesa Petroleum before he fulfilled his lifelong dream of owning his own business, Eugene’s Used Cars, which he operated successfully from 1972 until his death. He is preceded in death by six brothers: Dallas Hurt, Thomas Hurt, Hubert Hurt, Darwin Hurt, David Hurt and Roy Lee Hurt and three sisters: Reba Thornberry, Maxine Gilbert and Alma Jean Davis. He is survived by his wife: Betty Hurt of Tulia, two sons: Ricky Hurt and wife Cindy of Tulia and Billy Hurt and fiancé Ida Luera of Tulia, one brother: Bobby Hurt and wife Ann of Tulia, seven grandchildren: Heather Cooper and husband Luke, Lizzie Dutton and husband Taylor, Taylor Hurt, Deborah Spencer and husband Tres, Amy Hurt, Billy Hurt, Jr. and Caleb Hurt and five great grandchildren: Savannah, Daisy, Faith, Devin and Avery.
