George E. “Ed” Bennett, 83, of Hart, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, in Plainview. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 29, 2009, at First United Methodist Church in Hart with Rev. Travis Bennett officiating and Rev. Alvin Petty assisting. Burial will follow in Hart Cemetery under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. A visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Ed was born June 6, 1925 in Floydada, Texas to George Ray and Alla Bennett. They moved to Hart in 1937 and he graduated from Hart High School in 1942. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during WWII. After the war he returned home where he farmed and ranched for many years. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and served on many committees. He was also a member of the Masons and Shriner’s for 60 years. He served as a County Commissioner for 12 years. He also served on various local and national boards. He married Willa Sue Austin on June 3, 1945 in Hart. Survivors include his wife Sue of the Home; three sons, George Bennett and wife Charlene, Harold Bob Bennett and wife Ruth, Mark Bennett and wife Vivian all of Hart; one sister, Marguerite McLain and husband Lawrence of Hart; one brother, B.R. “Bob” Bennett and wife Marlene of Hart; eight grandchildren, Eric Bennett, April Heard, Shea Brattain, Andy Bennett, Travis Bennett, Stacey Shaffer, Jeff Bennett, John Mark Bennett; and eight great grandchildren, Jalen, Bo, Bree, Logan, Shiloh, Ethan, Jax, and Savannah. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Byron Bennett; and five grandchildren.
