J. D. Ellis (Plainview)

J. D. Ellis, 93, of Plainview, passed away on Friday, May 29, 2009, in Plainview. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at Garland Street Church of Christ in Plainview with Steve Stokes officiating. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. A visitation will be held from 6-7:30P.M., Monday, June 1, 2009, at the funeral home. Mr. Ellis was born July 18, 1915, in Stockdale, Texas, to Sidney and Icey Ellis. He married Mattie Lou Applewhite on December 20, 1942, in Hale Center. J.D. grew up in Silverton and Tascosa, Texas. He was the Head Cheese at Plains Coop Creamery in Plainview. He served for two years in the U.S. Navy stationed at Williamsburg, VA and Jacksonville, FL. He was a farmer and an auctioneer and served on the board of the United Farm Industries and Hi-Plains Hospital. J.D. was a founding member of Garland Street Church of Christ where he had been an Elder for 26 years. Mr. Ellis is survived by his wife, Mattie Lou Ellis of Plainview; three children, Rodney & Jude Ellis of Adelaide, Australia, Pam & Gary Hull of Hale Center, and Danny & Lisa Ellis of Plainview; two sisters, Ruth Greer of Plainview and Dorothy (Dot) Franklin of Vidalia, LA; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Mae Ellis of Tyler; seven grandchildren, Levi Ellis, Megan Payne, Tristan Hughes, serving on the U.S.S. Stennis, Kylie Hughes, Garth Hughes, Daniel Ellis and James Dustin Ellis, seven great-grandchildren and 24 nieces & nephews. J.D. was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Charley Ellis and Odis Ellis, and three sisters, Lorene Mallow, Irene Brown and Evalee Huntington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lubbock Children’s Home, PO Box 2824, Lubbock, TX 79408.
