TULIA — Laverne Cook, 88, died Wednesday, July 20, 2016. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel with Oscar Chavez, chaplain of Area Community Hospice, officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are by Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. Laverne was born Jan. 8, 1928, in Coleman to Thomas L. and Fay Hicks. She moved to Tulia at an early age and attended Tulia schools. She married Harold Douglas Cook on Oct. 26, 1946, in Dallas. They lived in Tulia where they owned Cook’s Studio for several years. She also worked for Piggly Wiggly grocery store, was a rural mail carrier on the Vigo route, owned and operated Vern’s Kitchen and worked at the Tulia nursing home. She loved to paint but more importantly she loved her animals. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and an infant brother. Survivors include three sons, Doug Cook and wife Debra of White Deer, Gary Cook and wife Kim of Taos, N.M., and David Cook of Tulia; a sister, Brenda Frausto of Lubbock; seven grandchildren, Crystal Fouquet and husband Bobby of White Deer, Ryan Cook and wife April of Canadian, Shana McDowell and husband Sy of Tulia, Aaron Cook and wife Jeanelle of Orange Beach, Ala., Logan Cook of Taos, Amanda Goins and husband Jason of Portales, N.M., and Amber Russell and husband Dustin of Taos; 19 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
