Tulia – Wynona Burrow Bates, 86, formerly of Tulia, passed away June 19, 2009 in Henderson, Texas. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at Calvary Baptist Church in Tulia. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. A visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Wynona was born June 28, 1922 in Rocky, Oklahoma to Earl and Ethel Burrow. Her family moved to Texas just north of Tulia in 1924. She graduated from Tulia High School at age 16 and attended Lubbock Nursing School. She worked for several doctors before working for Swisher Memorial Hospital for almost 40 years. She retired in 1983. She was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church. She moved to Henderson in 2005. She loved to go bowling and was an avid sports fan. She also loved Bluegrass music. She married Ben Ernest Bates on November 30, 1941 in Lockney. He preceded her in death in 1979. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Ethel Burrow; two sons(stillborn); two brothers, J.G. Burrow, Earl E. Burrow; and a sister, Moneta Allen. Survivors include a daughter, Judy Foster and husband John of Henderson; a son, Larry Bates and wife Ritha of Big Spring; one brother, Hardy Burrow of Tulia; sister-in-law, Elma Henson of Tulia; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Family suggests memorials to the Tulia Senior Citizens or the Tulia Cemetery Association.
