Tulia, Texas— Ava Nell Pope, 78, died Monday, June 29, 2009 in Amarillo. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 3, 2009 at the Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Helms officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. Ava Nell was born April 1, 1931 in Motley County to James and Lucille Monk. She grew up in Flomont and graduated from high school in 1948. She played basketball in high school and one year at West Texas State University in Canyon. She married Jean Pope on August 10, 1950 in Flomont. She was a homemaker and a bus driver for the ranch children. They moved to Tulia in 1965. She worked for First National Bank (Wells Fargo) for 30 years before retiring in 1995. She loved to Bowl and was a big Dallas Cowboy fan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jean in 1996 and her parents. Survivors include a son, Randy Pope and wife Mary Jo of Santa Fe, N.M.; one sister, Rosella Cannon and husband Lewis of Tulia; one brother, Calvin Monk and wife Elma of Pahrump, Nevada; and two grandchildren, Wesley Pope of Nazareth and Crystal Miller and husband Chris of Dallas. A visitation will be held from 6-8 pm on Thursday, July 2, 2009 at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the Tulia Cemetery Association, P.O. box 116, Tulia, Texas 79088.
