Tulia, Texas—Don A. Nelson, 83, passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2017. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 2:00 pm in the First Baptist Church with Rev. Jason Stone, pastor, and Rev. Charles Davenport, officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. Don was born on May 10, 1933 in Coal County, Oklahoma to Silas David and Tressa Mae Nelson. He grew up there. They moved to Tulia, TX in 1947 and he graduated from Tulia High School in 1951. He attended and graduated from Texas Tech with a degree in Agronomy. He joined the US Air Force and served two years in Okinawa and was a First Lieutenant. He returned to the Texas Panhandle to farm and ranch. He married Marlene Powell on September 28, 1978 in Tulia. He owned the Mooney Dealership Spraying Service in El Paso. He loved to fly. His hobbies were calf roping, racing horses and playing dominoes. He is survived by his wife Marlene Nelson of Tulia, one daughter: Donna Combs and husband Gary of Lubbock, two sons: Gary Nelson and wife Carolyn of Channing and Russell Nelson of Temple, three step-daughters: Terri Pearson and husband Bill of Happy, Karen Brockway and husband Tommy of Terrell and Tammy Shipman of Tulia, one brother: Larry “Squibb” Nelson and wife Rena of Tulia and one sister: Mona Borchardt of Tulia, 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
