Deryl was born December18, 1929 in Swisher County to Jeff and Oma Reeves Clevenger. He lived in the Tulia area until he graduated from high school, and then attended Abilene Christian College, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in General Agriculture in 1951. Deryl met and fell in love with Joan McCasland, and they married on December 9, 1951. After moving to Hart, Deryl's dedicated work with and his love for the Boy Scouts earned him an induction into the “Scout Hall of Fame” and numerous other awards and honors. He was named “Aggie of the Year” for Abilene Christian College in 1968. In 1970, he was named “Man of the Year” by the Hart Lions Club. Deryl served as elder for church congregations in Hart, Edmonson and Garland Street, Plainview. Deryl “retired” from farming in 1999, but continued to help his son, Duane, farm their land, and their summer gardens were legendary. A countless number of people ate from their garden; thousands ate from their table. Together with his wife, they truly have shown the gift of hospitality. Deryl loved to sing, and was a member of the Millennium Singers of Plainview. He also loved to play games with the Golden Group in Hart. Deryl and Joan traveled extensively, visiting all 50 states (many of them more than once) and 23 foreign countries on four continents. Deryl and Joan truly “lived” their 67 years together. Deryl was preceded in death by a son, Deryl Duane Clevenger, Jr.; parents, William and Oma Clevenger; two brothers, Wister and Harold Clevenger; and a sister, Jetaun George. He is survived by his wife, Joan Clevenger of Hart, Texas; three daughters, Iona Baldridge and husband Neil of Lubbock, TX, Dee Gannaway and husband Dale of Hobbs, NM, and Marie Clevenger of Hart, TX; one sister, Vonda Woolsey of Amarillo, TX; eight grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, and ten great great grandchildren. The family suggests memorials to the Tipton Home, 1000 N. Broadway Ave, Tipton, OK 73570 or Garland Street Church of Christ, 700 Garland St., Plainview, TX 79072.
