Lorane Butler Meriwether, 94, of Plainview passed from this life on February 5, 2017 in Plainview, TX. A Graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at the Lockney Cemetery in Lockney, TX with Bill Sherman officiating, assisted by J.W. Hamby. Arrangements are under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. Lorane was born August 21, 1922 in Binger, Oklahoma. In 1929, she moved with her parents, Thomas “Green” Butler and Edna Butler, to the Sandhills area between Olton and Littlefield. She graduated from Olton High School and then in 1940 she moved to Plainview to attend Lippert’s Business College. While living in Plainview, she met Austin B. Meriwether of Lockney and they married in August of 1941. Shortly after they married, Austin joined the Army Air Corp and flew as a bomber pilot in World War II. Lorane and Austin lived and farmed in Lockney many years and then in 1970 moved to Plainview. Lorane and Austin enjoyed traveling and playing bridge with their friends. She also enjoyed many years as a member of the Plainview Hospital Auxiliary and singing with the Millennium Singers. Lorane and Austin were members of Main Street Church of Christ in Lockney and after moving to Plainview, they joined the Garland Street Church of Christ, where they served for many years. Lorane is preceded in death by her husband, Austin, in 1998, her parents and a sister, Ozella Buck. She is survived by one daughter, Melinda Pratt, of Lubbock, one granddaughter, Shannon Womack, also of Lubbock, and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Westridge Manor who took such good care of Lorane for the last 5 years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Lubbock Children’s Home or the Covenant Plainview Hospital Auxiliary.
