Barbara McDonough (Plainview)

Funeral services for Barbara May Mickey McDonough, 88, of Plainview will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 11, at Northwest Church of Christ, with grandsons Franklin McDonough and Andrew Francis officiating and grandsons serving as pallbearers. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Home of Plainview. Visitation for family and friends will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Kornerstone Funeral Home. She died Tuesday at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock following a brief illness. A lifelong resident of Plainview, she was born May 9, 1928, the oldest of four daughters of C.S. “Smith” and Irene May Mickey. She attended Plainview schools, graduating from Plainview High School in 1946. That summer she enrolled in Watson’s Business College in Plainview. That fall, she enrolled in West Texas State Teachers College (now West Texas A&M University) in Canyon, enrolling in a pre-dental study. Two years into that study, she altered her career path by marrying John F. McDonough Jr., on Aug. 8, 1948, at Second and Beech Church of Christ in Plainview. They would have celebrated their 69th anniversary this year. She was baptized into Christ at Second and Beech Church of Christ, and she and her husband were charter members of 11th and Amarillo Church of Christ (now Northwest Church of Christ) in Plainview. While raising her children, Barbara was active in Scouting, serving as a den mother in Cub Scouts and as a Girl Scout leader, and as an officer in PTA at four different schools. In about 1970, Barbara became interested in genealogy. That interest continued the rest of her life, with her serving in most offices including president of Hi Plains Genealogical Society, on the Hale County Historical Commission and a 43-year member of the Mary McCoy Baines Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution including many years as regent. Survivors include her husband John of Plainview; sons Mike and Cornelia McDonough of Plainview, Doug and Brenda McDonough of Plainview and Mitchell and Veronica McDonough of Hereford; daughters Marilyn and Terry Vieregge of Lubbock and Michelle and Barry Francis of Silverton; sisters Theresa Price of Alvin, Maxine SoRelle of Canyon and Freda Longenecker of Hershey, Penn.; grandchildren Kyra and Chris Johnson of North Richland Hills, Randi and Jonathan Truelock of Brownfield, Amanda Vieregge of Lubbock, John Franklin III and Kelly McDonough of Pampa, Quentin Vieregge of Rice Lake, Wisc., Jared and Chantell Francis of Silverton, Nathan and Brenna Francis of Dallas, Andrew and Marka Francis of Halfway, Caleb and Chelsea Francis of Haslet, Jacob and Erika Francis of Canyon, Meredith McDonough of Plainview and Zachary McDonough of Plainview; and 24 great-grandchildren.
