Herschel Blankenship (Plainview)

Herschel Blankenship, 91, of Plainview, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2009, in Plainview. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at First United Methodist Church in Plainview, with Rev. Jerry Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. A visitation will be held from 6-7 P.M. Tuesday, September 8, 2009, at the funeral home. Mr. Blankenship was born on September 25, 1917, in Paul’s Valley, Oklahoma, to Bernie and Essie Faye Blankenship. Herschel graduated from Plainview High School and attended Texas Tech. He returned to Plainview to farm and married Lorene Devers. He loved to farm and began farming full time when he was 18 years old and retired from farming 68 years later. He married Dorris Greer in June of 1970 in Lockney. Herschel and Dorris enjoyed traveling and playing Bridge together. He was a member of the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class the First United Methodist Church of Plainview, the 57 Supper Club and the Plainview Country Club. Mr. Blankenship is survived by his wife Dorris Blankenship of Plainview, two daughters, JoAnn Carpenter of Escondido, CA, and Debra Atchison & husband Al of Houston, three sons, Gary Blankenship & wife Cindy of Colleyville, Royce Blankenship & wife Donna of Plainview and Tim Greer of Santa Fe, NM, ten grandchildren fourteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Mr. Blankenship was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Lorene Devers Blankenship and a son, Joe Greer. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Building Fund or to a favorite charity.
