Nila June Smith, a resident of El Granada, CA for the past twelve years, passed away on January 23, 2017. June was born on June 14, 1921 to DeWitt and Myrtle Carpenter in Elmer, Oklahoma. Her family moved to Texas and it was there that she met her future husband, Donald. They were married on November 19, 1939, and moved to Petersburg in 1948. June was a longtime member of the Eastern Star in Petersburg where she served as Worthy Matron. June was predeceased by her husband, Donald in 1987. She was also predeceased by her brothers Gerald and Paul Carpenter, and her granddaughter, Jenny Fiol Birch. She is survived by her sister, Ernestine Bryant of Lubbock, TX, her sons, Robert (Tricia Chambers) of El Granada, CA, Lynn (Retta) of Grannis, AR, and her daughter, Jeanne Fiol Buringame of Boston, MA. She also leaves two grandchildren, Jennifer Murphy and Shilo Smith, and six great grandchildren, Kaylene, Beckett, Blayne and Blake Smith, and Nate and Heidi Birch. June was an active participant at the Senior Center in Half Moon Bay. She made many close friendships with her fellow Coastsiders and enjoyed attending the center for lunch, Rosen Movement exercise classes and shopping. A graveside service under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors will be held at Petersburg Cemetery at 11:00 A.M. on July 12, 2017. The service will be followed by a buffet lunch at the Petersburg Community Center.
