M.T. "Jack" Isom (Plainview)

M.T. “Jack” Isom passed away August 3, 2017 after a short battle with cancer. Jack was born August 31, 1930 to Dutch and Molly Isom in Idalou, Texas. He had three older sisters and one older brother. Jack lived on the farm in Idalou. At age 7, he and his family moved to a farm outside of Cone, Texas and continued to farm. He told many stories of growing up on the farm with no electricity or running water. He helped his dad with every task around the farm, learning many skills along the way. The family grew all their own food as well as raising livestock for meat and milk. Jack attended school in Ralls and graduated at the age of 15. He was proud of the fact he “skipped” a grade; later admitted there wasn’t a teacher for that grade, so he and two other students were “placed” into the next grade. Jack joined the U.S. Army, completed basic training and had begun his first assignment when he was called home to help care for his dad who became ill. He began farming again and met the love of his life, Willetta. They were married on September 8, 1961 and lived in the Aiken/Lockney communities until moving to Plainview in 2010. Following retirement from farming, Jack began working at Cargill Hybrid Seed Company as a farm management consultant throughout central Texas. Cargill sold to Delta & Pine Land Company and Jack continued working in the same capacity. Upon retiring in 1997 at the age of 67, he began contracting to ferry various types of trucks across the nation. He retired from this at the age of 80. Jack then began working in his yard, garden and growing grapes. Known as “Pop” to his grandchildren and great grandchildren he always had a project going. The kids were amazed that Pop could fix anything! Often it would have been cheaper and faster just to purchase a new item; but not Pop, he enjoyed tinkering and fixing things at his own pace. Pop loved his family. He had four children, Desiree & Chris Richardson, Valerie Isom, Mike Isom of Plainview and Jeff & Kristi Isom of Odessa; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Willetta; his parents Dutch and Molly Isom; three sisters, Marie Wideman, Helen Strickland and Louise Giddeon; one brother, Bernard Isom; an infant son, Christopher Isom and a grandson, Josh Isom. Special thanks to Area Home Health Care, especially Julia Ontiveros. Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, August 7, 2017 at Kornerstone Funeral Chapel in Plainview, with Mike Isom and Dennis Butler officiating. Burial will follow in the Lockney Cemetery under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors in Plainview, Texas. A visitation will be held 4:00 – 6:00 P.M. Sunday, August 6, 2017 at Kornerstone Funeral Directors. Memorial contributions may be made to Snack Pak 4 Kids, Plainview I.S.D., 701 Park Place, Amarillo, TX 79109 Online condolences can be made at www.kornerstonefunerals.com.
