Vera Ott (Plainview)

Vera Hope Story Ott went to be with her Heavenly Father on October 17, 2009 while visiting in her daughter’s home in Austin, Texas. Services on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors will include a private burial at 11:00 am and a memorial service at 2:00 pm in the chapel of First Baptist Church, Plainview, Texas with Dr. Travis Hart officiating. Family will greet friends in the church parlor following the service. She was born Jan. 22, 1927 in Appling, Georgia to Willie Rad Story and Julia Hope (Farr) Story. She married Angus Courtney Ott, Jr. on May 3, 1947 in Augusta, Georgia. They moved to Plainview, Texas in 1951, where she enjoyed being a full-time mother and being involved in the church and school PTA activities of her children. She graduated from Wayland Baptist College in 1968. She taught first and second grade at Thunderbird Elementary School, retiring in 1986. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and the Pastor’s class. During her retirement she enjoyed her second career as a RSVP/community volunteer. Her servant’s heart embraced every volunteer project with energy and enthusiasm. She was extremely active in the Covenant Hospital Auxiliary, where she and Angus chaired the Christmas Card Project for many years. She served as president of The Hale County Historical Commission. As a couple, they were avid patrons of the Plainview Community Concerts and Plainview Symphony Orchestra. Other interests included gardening, traveling, and reading, especially historical biographies. In all her activities, she most enjoyed the interaction with people and her joy for life was obvious and contagious to all she encountered. Her true passions in life were her four children and seven grandchildren. But the love of her life was her husband and best friend of 62 years. She is survived by her husband, one son, Gary Ott of Midland, three daughters, Hope English of Plainview, Sandra Simoneau and her husband, Emil of Austin, and Marsha Wilson and her husband, Shawn of Lincoln, Nebraska. Seven grandchildren, Chad English and his wife, Jodi of Ft. Worth, Brent English of Plainview, Courtney Hope Wilson of Tyler, Caroline Wilson of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Emily, Leslie, and Sam Simoneau of Austin and twin great grandchildren due in November; and one brother, Lawrence Story of Harlem, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be directed to the Angus and Vera Ott Endowed Scholarship at Wayland Baptist University.
