Roy Daffern (Plainview)

Roy Howard Daffern, 90, of Plainview died Thursday, November 5, 2009. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, November 9, 2009 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Travis Hart officiating. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. Roy was born on October 18, 1919 to Robert Custer Daffern and Mattie Beatrice (Bea) Hodges Daffern on a ranch they were homesteading near Fort Sumner, NM. In 1922 he moved with his family to Plainview, where he lived out the rest of his life, except for military service during World War II. He graduated from Plainview High School in 1938 and went to work for his father at Daffern Feed and Coal Company. When World War II came, he volunteered and served as a Morse code operator in the U. S. Army Signal Corps, which was coordinating the Allied advance on the southern front of the European theatre. When the war ended, he returned to Plainview and married his sweetheart, Georgia Elizabeth Cox, on September 26, 1945. Mr. Daffern continued the family business through many changes, including a change in the name to Daffern Steel and Supply Company. Although the business was sold when he retired in 1989, it continues in operation today. Mr. Daffern was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and church treasurer for many years. Mr. Daffern was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister. His survivors include his wife, Georgia Daffern of Plainview; his five daughters and their spouses: Gwen and Fred Willis and Pat and Blaine Smith, also of Plainview, Linda and Jay Waggoner of Fort Worth, Elaine Graves of Austin, and Pam Daffern of Richmond, VA. He also had twelve grandchildren: Kathi Calvert; Chris Willis; Amy and Danny Waggoner; Jason, Jeff, and Johnathon Graves; Erin Galyean; Jeana and Patrick Smith; and Andrew and Sara Daffern. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Hudson Calvert and Elizabeth Galyean, and special family friends, Joanne Cooper and Roberto Cherchi. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 4:30 today, Sunday, November 8, at Kornerstone Funeral Directors. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 205 West 8th Street, Plainview, TX 79072, or to the American Cancer Society, 3411 73rd Street, Lubbock, TX 79423.
