Dewey Melton, 90, of Plainview passed away on Monday, November 16, 2009 in Plainview. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 18, 2009 in the Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel with Mr. Wayne Horton , pastor of Cactus Drive Church of Christ in Levelland officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Dewey was born on September 13, 1919 in Marietta, Texas to Robert and Avis Melton. He grew up in Memphis, Texas and graduated from Memphis High School in 1939. He worked for 2 years before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941. He served during WWII in the Pacific Theater. After his service to his country, he returned and lived in the Northern Panhandle and worked for the gas company for a couple of years. He married Odena Yarbrough on January 1, 1946 in Plainview. They moved to Plainview in 1949 to farm. He retired from farming in 2002. He was a member of the 9th and Columbia Church of Christ. Dewey was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Avis Melton; brother, Alvis Melton; and a sister, Glenna Mae. Survivors include his wife, Odena Melton of Plainview; three sons, Gary Melton of Lubbock, Weldon Melton and wife Judy of Plainview, Kenny Melton and wife Shelley of Lubbock; seven grandchildren, Rob Melton, Ryan Melton, Jared Melton, Kimberlea Brandon, Erin Melton, Bailey Melton, Tucker Melton; and seven great-grandchildren. Memorials may be sent to the Lubbock Childrens Home.
