Melba “Mel” Slater Potts, 84, of Plainview died Monday, December 14, 2009. Memorial services will be at 2:00 P.M. Friday, December 18, 2009 at First United Methodist Church, Plainview, Texas with Rev. Jerry Moore, Pastor, officiating and Dr. Max Browning assisting. Private burial and funeral arrangements are under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. Mel was born on September 27, 1925 in Dallas, Texas to Allie and E.R. Slater. She grew up in the Lubbock area, graduated from Cooper High School and received a degree in Home Economics from Texas Tech University. Mel was an educator and taught at Cooper and Kress, Texas and Lovington, New Mexico for 10 years and was a homemaker after their children were born. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, former board member of R.S.V.P., and a member of the Hi-Rise Investment Group. Mel was an accomplished seamstress, loved playing bridge and had a strong desire to make higher education possible for others by endowing scholarships at Texas Tech University and Wayland Baptist University. Mel married James A. “Doc” Potts on June 28, 1946 in Lubbock. Survivors include her husband, James A. “Doc” Potts, of Plainview; three daughters and sons-in-law: J’Melle Potts Fletcher and husband, Gary, of Amarillo; Kathy Potts Boyett and husband, David, of Dallas; Marilyn Potts Gentry and husband, Rob, of Denton; one son and daughter-in-law, James R. “Jim” and wife Karen of Abilene; one sister, Alice Sayers, of Redondo Beach, California; nine grandchildren: Gary Fletcher, Justin Fletcher, Jaime Fletcher Wilburn, Claire Boyett, Andrew Boyett, Alison Gentry Dalton, Kathryn Gentry, William Potts, Amanda Potts; and six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 Thursday, December 17, at Kornerstone Funeral Directors in Plainview. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Wee Care Child Care Center, 2305 Yonkers, Plainview, Texas 79072; Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (R.S.V.P.), 1900 W. 7th, CMV 459, Plainview, Texas 79072; First United Methodist Church, 1001 W. 7th, Plainview, Texas 79072 or any charity of your choice.
