Tulia, Texas--Myrtle Duke Jennings, 99, died Tuesday, February 23, 2010 in Tulia. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Friday, February 26, 2010 in the Central Church of Christ with Trey Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. She was born in the family home on the north rim of the Palo Duro in Armstrong County, Texas on September 5, 1910. She attended school in Claude. She moved to Channing and lived with a sister and brother-in-law for her senior year of high school. After graduation she attended West Texas Teachers College in Canyon until funds ran out. She went to work for Woolworth Co. in Albuquerque then in Lincoln, Nebraska and finally Amarillo. She then went back to West Texas Teachers College and received her teacher’s certificate. She married A.H. Jennings in 1933 and moved to Muleshoe where Mr. Jennings taught school. Later they moved to Swisher Co. and both taught in the Salem School in NE Swisher County. They then taught school at Stone Community in Armstrong Co. They purchased a farm in Vigo Community and started farming. They sold this farm and bought a farm south of Tulia in 1942. She was involved in farming and business ventures with her husband including being some of the original owners of Houston Elevator and Tulia Feedlot. She was a member of Central Church of Christ in Tulia where she taught bible classes and vacation bible school for many years. After retiring she made quilts for all the family members (over 100) and won awards for some of her creations. She was preceded in death by her parents: M B and Idella Duke, 5 brothers, 3 sisters and her husband. She is survived by one daughter: Linda Joy and husband Brent of Tulia, one son: E. Ray Jennings and wife Melody of Tulia, 4 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
