Tulia, Texas—Bettie Joyce Smith, 81, died Sunday, April 4, 2010 in Tulia. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at the Central Church of Christ with Bruce Baird, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park in Plainview under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. Bettie was born February 23, 1929 in Lockney to Frank and Myrtle Messimer. She grew up there and graduated from Lockney High. She married Elmer Roberts on March 5, 1946. They lived mainly in the Kress area for several years. Elmer passed away June 6, 1976. She went to South Plains and Texas Tech and received a degree in food service. She worked for a nursing home in Plainview and Tulia as the food service supervisor. She won a national award for writing diabetic recipes. She married Russell Smith in 1988. He died January 1999. Survivors include: three daughters: Barbara and Thomas Fowler of Levelland, Phyllis and Ricky Settle of Canton and Kathy and Darrell Nelson of Tulia, one son: Frankie and Terri Roberts of Sanger, two step-daughters: Cleta and Johnny Tyree of Wayside, Judy and Denny Fletcher of Washburn, Missouri, one step-son: Russell D. Smith of Rogers, Arkansas, two sisters: Ruby Reynolds of Olton and Charlene Hughes of Amarillo, 15 grandchildren and several great and great, great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her two husbands, one step-son: Aaron Roberts and four grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 50433, Amarillo, TX 79159 or to the American Cancer Association, 3915 Bell St., Amarillo, TX 79109.
