Tulia, Texas—David Burgess, 83, died Friday, April 16, 2010 in Tulia. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Monday, April 19, 2010 in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Kay Reed, pastor and Rev. Larry D. Mills, retired Baptist minister, officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. David was born December 25, 1926 in Swisher County. He grew up in Tulia and graduated from Tulia High School in 1944. He went to Texas Tech and studied two years of pre-med before getting his degree in Business Administration graduating from Tech in May 1949. He married Mary Harris on August 28, 1948 in Tulia. They moved back to Tulia and started his diversified farming operations there for several years. After he retired he started selling insurance for several years. He was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church in Tulia where he served as a Sunday school teacher, worked with the youth and sang in the choir. He was a member of the Tulia Masonic Lodge where he held all leadership positions and became a 32nd degree Mason. He was a past president of the Kiwanis’ Club, President of the Panhandle Gas Users Assoc., past President of the National Farmers Union. He was responsible for starting the Green Thumb Program in Texas. He was President of the Swisher County Historical Commission and was very active in the Plainview Community Concerts. He is survived by his wife: Mary Burgess of Tulia, one son and daughter-in-law: Don and Carolyn Burgess of Flower Mound, four grandsons: Dustin Burgess of Flynt, Devin Burgess of Chicago, IL, Donovan Burgess of Plano and Joshua Burgess of Flower Mound, two great granddaughters: Brooke Burgess of Flynt and Lily Mae Burgess of Chicago, IL. He is preceded in death by a son: David Burgess, MD. Memorials may be made to the Tulia Masonic Lodge or to a charity of your choice.
