Alvin Hugh “A.H.” Noel, 85, passed away on Tuesday, August 10, 2010, in Plainview. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 13, 2010, at College Heights Baptist Church with Pastor Dennis Butler of Aiken Baptist Church officiating and Scott Noel assisting. Interment will follow at Plainview Cemetery under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors. A.H. was born November 11, 1924 southeast of Plainview to Walter S. and Numa Booher Noel. He was the third of eleven children all of whom were born on the Noel home place. A.H. attended the Bellview School southeast of Plainview and transferred to Plainview in1939 where he graduated in 1942. Following graduation, A.H. farmed and entered the United States Army in 1945 serving during World War II as a medic. He was assigned to the 77th Infantry Division, also known as the New York Division. He served in the Philippines and participated in the occupation of Japan. After being honorably discharged, A.H. returned to Hale County and married Winnie Lou Cartwright on December 6, 1947. An industrious and entrepreneurial person, A.H. started his construction business, Noel Steel Works, in 1949 which later incorporated as Noel Industries, Inc. A.H. enjoyed World War II history, was a prodigious reader and was an avid collector of many things. Nothing was junk to him. He was a member of the Ray Blakemore American Legion Post #260 and a life member of the Wilson Bros. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5399. He served as commander of both. A.H. was a member of the Aiken Baptist Church. A.H. is survived by his children Donice and husband Kim Hays, Randy and wife Karen Noel, Ted and wife Patti Noel and Terry; six grandchildren Lee Bertelson, Manda Rosser, Kelly Shackelford, Mikel Bechtold, Scott Noel and Suzanne Noel; six great grandchildren Kate and Emma Bertelson, Zoe and Noah Bechtold, and Aubrey and Cotton Rosser. Surviving sisters are Eloise Pennington, Neva Stallings & Kathryn Ivey. Surviving brothers are Leon, Edward, Don, and Howard. His wife, Winnie Lou, and three brothers, Leonard, Allen and Charles, preceded him in death. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial gifts be made to the Galileo School, which is operated by his grandson Scott Noel.
