Babrak Khaleeq, 75, of Plainview passed away on Monday, January 28 2019. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, January 31, 2019 at Kornerstone Chapel with Oscar Chavez, Area Community Hospice Chaplain officiating. Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 2, 2019 in Evergreen Cemetery in Beatrice, Nebraska. A family visitation will be held Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Babrak was born on January 15, 1944 in Gardiz, Afghanistan. He married Barbara Linsenmeyer on December 19, 1988 in Miami, OK. Babrak left home at age 13 to go to school in Kabul. He valued studying and hard work, and eventually earned a B.S degree in Agriculture, two M.S. degrees in Agriculture Business & Economics and Field Crop Production, an MBA, and a PhD in Plant Breeding and Genetics. He developed a breed millet to help create high protein flour across the continent of Africa. He taught all over the world, including Afghanistan, Turkey, India, Pakistan, and the United States. He was a dean in the College of Agriculture at the University of Kabul, and immigrated to the United States in 1976 as a part of a professor exchange program with the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. While there, he completed his PhD and met his future wife, Barbara. He chose to stay in the United States and became a U.S. citizen in 1990. He worked in plant breeding for several companies in Plainview. His hobbies included photography and oil painting, and he enjoyed the stock market, soccer, and old western movies. He is survived by his wife Barbara Khaleeq of Plainview, a daughter, Sara Khaleeq of Longmont, CO and a son, Aaron Khaleeq of The Woodlands, Texas.
