Carter Gene White, 90, of Hale Center, Texas passed away Wednesday, December 21, 2022. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at First Baptist Church in Hale Center, Texas with Rev.Taylor Smith officiating. Viewing will be at the church from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Terrace Cemetery in Post, Texas. Arrangements are under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview, Texas.
He was born at home to Lowe and Beulah White in Garza County on January 30, 1932.
He married Sybil Lois Smith on July 7, 1951. Carter graduated from Post High School and attended Texas Tech University. In high school he was voted Mr. PHS and was on the football, basketball, baseball and boxing teams. After high school he played on the Post Millers baseball team as a short stop.
He was a sharpshooter in the National Guard during the Korean War. He worked in the oil field and he began farming in 1953. Later, he managed U Lazy S Farms in Garza County. In 1972 he began the job of Livestock Inspector for the Texas Animal Health Commission and raised paint horses. He retired in 2001 after twenty nine years with the State. As a youth he was active in the 4-H club, raising and showing steers. This earned him a trip to New York and Chicago. As an adult he helped with the 4-H horse clubs in Garza, Lynn and Hale Counties. Carter had a life-long love of horses and livestock. Some of his fondest memories were of riding, training and showing cutting horses alongside his brother, Noel. He could recall many true stories about family and friends and their horses. He documented those stories and others in two books he wrote and published.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lowe and Buelah White and his brother, Noel White.
He is survived by his wife, Sybil of 71 years of Hale Center; two daughters, Cynthia Thurman and husband Don of Plainview, Sherry McNeely and husband Stanley of Crosbyton; sister-in-law, Orabeth White of Post; two granddaughters, Wendy Bumpus and husband Bob of Paducah and Whitney Dorsett and husband Matt of Post and six great grandchildren; Kye Baker, Grady Dorsett and Radley, Jessye, Steelye and Hayes Bumpus. To his grandchildren and great grandchildren he was affectionately known as “Pa”.
The family would like to thank Interim Hospice and the staff of Prairie House Living Center for their kind and loving care.
